President Trump's First Day Actions
January 22, 2025
Reversal of DEI Initiatives
President Trump signed an executive order and memorandum ending DEI programs in the FAA and across the federal government, including federal contracting and spending. He argues that DEI programs prioritize diversity over merit and safety, citing an instance where the FAA hired individuals with intellectual disabilities. The order mandates a shift to merit-based hiring and promotion. This reverses Biden-era DEI policies and directs agencies to combat private sector discrimination, including rescinding affirmative action requirements for federal contractors.
The stated purpose is to protect civil rights, expand individual opportunity, and restore values of individual dignity, hard work, and excellence. The administration believes DEI fosters intergroup hostility and authoritarianism, and that billions of dollars spent on DEI are wasteful and counterproductive.
Border Security
President Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border, directing the deployment of military personnel, completion of the border wall, and enhanced air missions. This is in response to a perceived surge in illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and gang activity.
An additional executive order suspends the entry of individuals deemed to be part of an "invasion" at the southern border. This reinforces the administration's focus on border security and asserts the President's authority to repel illegal immigration. The justification is that states have been left unprotected, bearing the costs of illegal immigration. This relates to Project 2025 goals of securing borders.
Economic Relief
President Trump signed a memorandum aiming to provide emergency price relief to address the cost-of-living crisis. This involves directing agencies to remove regulatory burdens imposed during the Biden administration across several sectors including housing, healthcare, and appliances. This action potentially aligns with Project 2025’s aims to reduce the administrative state and promote economic growth.
Foreign Policy
President Trump initiated the redesignation of the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). This reverses the Biden administration’s decision to remove the designation and reflects a more hawkish stance towards the group. The order cites Houthi attacks on US Navy warships and civilian infrastructure as justification. This seems to align with Project 2025’s focus on a strong national defense and assertive foreign policy.
Clemency Grants
President Trump granted full and unconditional pardons to Andrew Zabavsky and Terence Sutton. Zabavsky was convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Sutton was convicted of rioting, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. These actions have no direct relation to Project 2025.
Nominations
President Trump submitted several nominations to the Senate for various positions within the administration. This is standard procedure for a new presidential term. This may support Project 2025 through staffing key roles with individuals who share the project's goals, but this is not explicit in this document.
